Farnsfield and Edingley, 22nd February 2015

As you drive down the A6097 just before the Oxton by-pass, you may have wondered about those lumps on the horizon to your left. Well this walk took us up to the most southerly one, the buried remains of Farnsfield Roman camp.

We started at Farnsfield's Parish Church of St Michael...

... and up through Combs Wood ...
... planning to get to the camp in time for coffee.  The wind drove us back from the top of the camp ...
... to the shelter of the trees but not before we enjoyed the panorama to the west.

We retraced our steps a bit, avoiding the very muddy fields by walking down Greaves Lane and then picked up the Robin Hood Way from which we had some more panoramic views to the north (photo taken on the recce) ...

... and then headed for the Parish Church of St Giles at ...

As the forecast rain came down we headed back to Farnsfield along the Southwell Trail ...
... saving the diversion to see the red deer and famous potato fields in Hexgreave Park to the north of Farnsfield for another day

Edwinstowe, 8th February 2015

You have had a preview of this but here we go again.

Starting at the Visitors Centre car park, this route ...

... took  us through Edwinstowe and past its13th century church, the setting for the marriage of Robin Hood and Maid Marian (allegedly) ...

... then along the River Maun ...
... and alongside the Duke of Portland's flood meadows.

Then we entered Sherwood Forest, past Archway house ...

... built by the 4th Duke of Portland and from where you could once see the Centre Tree across the forest.
It's there somewhere
Sherwood Forest has some of the oldest oak and silver birch trees in England ...

... including of course The Major Oak.

Finally, we returned across heathland ...

to the Visitors Centre to see Robin and Little John fight it out (allegedly).

And we look forward to seeing Gill and Snowy again on future walks.  Watch out though, Anny will be after that coat.
