Croxton Kerrial and Harston, 25th July 2017

Tina led this walk from Croxton to Harston and back in glorious evening sunshine.  Next week's walk from Car Colston is the last of the Summer Strolls and starts at 18:30 with skittles at 20:00 at the Royal Oak.

Bunny to Willoughby and part of the Wolds Way, 23rd July 2017

This was the first of three self-guided walks on successive Sundays covering sections of the Nottingham Wolds Way with Malcolm co-ordinating arrangements, in particular the car shuffling from the meeting point in Willoughby-on-the-Wolds.  Today's was a six-mile linear walk from Bunny back to Willoughby via Wysall and John kindly offered to guide a good turnout of sixteen ramblers.  The next two walks will be circular to avoid transport difficulties.
 Here are some of Steve's photographs.

What beauties!
The walk passed an old entrance to the British Gypsum mines beneath East Leake and surrounding areas.  It's worth following this link to find out the staggering scale of mining near here -

  • the mine covers around 15 square miles below ground;
  • gypsum is currently extracted at a rate of 250,000 tonnes a year;
  • installed capacity is more than 600,000 tonnes a year.

Hoveringham and Caythorpe, 20th July 2017

A good turnout for Angela's walk from Hoveringham, up the Trent, over to Caythorpe and back to the start.  Ten VBR members were joined by eight walkers who had found us in the Nottinghamshire Guide Walks Programme - click here to find out more about this excellent free publication.

It was too dull for photographs, but here is one prepared earlier!

Bradgate Park and Beacon Hill, 2nd July 2017

Roger's ten-mile route took fourteen us from Swithland Woods, through Woodhouse Eaves and up to Beacon Hill, then on to lunch near Ulverscroft Priory before heading to Newtown Linford for ice cream.  The group then split with Roger heading to the Leicestershire Yeomany War Memorial and Old John Tower (orange route) and the rest along the path to visit an archaeological dig and then back via the edge of Cropston Reservoir (blue route).
